At Duo for a Job, young people with a migration background are paired with people over 50 with the necessary life experience. They can use their network and experience to help these young people move forward. That's how Rabeh came into contact with Joke who helps him learn the Dutch language. Eventually, he also hopes to be able to play football again and start hairdressing training.
He is also helped by Joke with this. “For example, we are now asking some football clubs whether he can play there next season,” says Joke. To stay fit, they decided to climb the Laurenskerk this week. “We've also already started cycling. Joke really loves cycling,” laughs Rabeh. Joke responds: “I'm just a proud Rotterdammer. So we've already cycled across the Willemsbrug and I'd love to take him to the highlights.” In this way, she also teaches him something about the history of the city.
Rabeh came to the Netherlands from Syria about a year and a half ago and already speaks a nice word of Dutch. He hopes to start hairdressing training in February 2024. “To do that, you need to reach a certain level of Dutch. So that's what I'm working on right now. I try to listen, read and speak Dutch as much as possible,” he says with motivation. “My language has also really improved because of Joke. She's also a bit strict,” he says shyly. “I usually take the football magazine VI with me and then I'm a strict teacher and tell him: “I need you to read this part of me”, Joke responds with a laugh. “My next step is to get an education so that I can work and make my future in the Netherlands come true,” Rabeh concludes.
